The Match

In a huge upset at the Madrid Open, unseeded team Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Brazilian player Luisa Stefani Haddad Maia defeated top seeds and favorites, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the United States in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

The match, which lasted over an hour and 20 minutes, saw the Azarenka-Haddad Maia partnership put pressure on Gauff and Pegula’s serve from the very beginning. Despite their best efforts, the top seeds lost their first set on a break of serve, with the unseeded duo not looking back and winning the second set with relative ease.

The Players

Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion and former world No. 1, currently ranked world No. 16 in singles and No. 37 in doubles. Haddad Maia, on the other hand, is a two-time ITF singles champion and has three doubles titles to her name. The pair had only teamed up once before in Stuttgart back in April, where they reached the quarterfinals.

Gauff and Pegula, both ranked in the top 40 in singles, are two of the hottest young American tennis players on tour right now. 17-year-old Gauff, who has been making waves since her breakthrough performance at Wimbledon in 2019, has already won one WTA singles title at the age of 15. 27-year-old Pegula, meanwhile, is having a career-best season, having already made three semifinals and two finals in 2021 alone.

The Aftermath

Following their upset win, Azarenka and Haddad Maia will now face either Demi Schuurs and Nicole Melichar or Darija Jurak and Andreja Klepac in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Gauff has already bounced back with a win in her next match, defeating Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of singles. Pegula, however, has withdrawn from the doubles competition due to an injury.
