From Yakuza Criminal to Ukrainian Soldier: The Incredible Transformation of a Former Japanese Convict
In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, a former yakuza gang member, Ryuta Kawashima, decided to transform his life completely and fight for Ukraine as a volunteer soldier.
The Yakuza Years
Kawashima was born in Osaka in 1979. His father was an alcoholic and gambler who frequently beat his family. To escape his dysfunctional home life, Kawashima turned to street gangs and eventually became a member of the yakuza at the age of 18.
For ten years, he lived a life of crime, drugs, and violence. He served time in prison for drug trafficking and extortion, and during his sentence, he realized that he was wasting his life and hurting his loved ones.
Once he was released, Kawashima decided to turn his life around completely. He wanted to do something meaningful and good. That’s when he learned about the crisis in Ukraine and decided to volunteer as a soldier.
He arrived in Ukraine in 2015, where he met with a group of volunteers who shared his cause. Together, they joined the Azov Battalion, a Ukrainian nationalist militia unit.
Despite the fact that he didn’t speak Ukrainian or Russian, Kawashima learned quickly and fought hard on the front line alongside his fellow soldiers. He was even awarded a medal for his bravery in combat.
Kawashima’s decision to fight for Ukraine was not only a physical challenge but also a mental one. He had to overcome his past and prove to himself and others that he could change and make a difference.
Additionally, his Japanese citizenship made it difficult for him to stay in Ukraine legally, so he had to keep renewing his visa and navigate complex bureaucratic processes. However, he persevered through the obstacles and continued to fight for his adopted country.
In 2019, after four years of service, Kawashima was granted Ukrainian citizenship and honored as a national hero. He returned to Japan to visit his family and share his story with others, hoping to inspire them to transform their lives and make a positive impact on the world.
His incredible transformation from a yakuza criminal to a Ukrainian soldier is truly remarkable and inspiring.
